London rapper Toya Delazy is ensuring her voice echoes all the way across the Atlantic. In addition to being the voice of the first Black Powerpuff Girl, Delazy is fervently releasing hot music. Her latest single, “The Greatest” is a shot of vivacious optimism in audio form. Delazy, who has spent time away from loved ones to pursue her dreams, soaks up her sacrifice as a means to her dreams.
Toya melodically narrates the beautiful moment in which one’s hard work pays off, and inspires listeners to be grateful for their grind. The production, which comes from the mind of South African-based producer Silas Beats, provides infectious synths and stutter-step drums to sync with Delazy’s breezy musings.
“It was based on the fact that I was in London, working so much and having a very different schedule to my lover. Each time we do money-driven things, we lose time with family and all these things we love. The song is just about dreaming, and speaking of a time when we’re working so hard but we are working for a better life.” She said.
The 27-year-old has already tasted success in the music industry; she was signed to Sony Africa and released two albums, Due Drop in 2013 and Ascension in 2014. She was nominated for a BET award for Best International Act: Africa in 2013, and became the voice of Blisstina for the Powerpuff Girls’ “Power of Four” special in September.
Expect more of Toya’s signature hybrid of electro, hip hop and jazz on her upcoming debut album, due out in December.
